The San Francisco 49ers dropped an ugly loss in Week 5 and the previously winless Arizona Cardinals are now 1-4. The 49ers dropped to 1-4
, losing by a final score of 28-12. And drop really is the key phrase given how badly the 49ers receivers looked trying to catch the ball. This was a decidedly ugly game, and win or lose, it was going to tell us something about the 49ers. They are just not a good football team right now. They can make things happen, and can do some very impressive things, but more often than not they are screwing up. It is either bad tackling, or dropped passes, or penalties, or some shaky play-calling, or otherwise poor execution.C.J. Beathard’s performance was a mix of everything on Sunday. He made some big plays, but he was twice stripped of the ball. His pocket awareness is not so good, and it is leading to bad things. At the same time, when he was executing on his throws, he was not helped by his receivers. They regularly dropped big passes that cost the team chances to convert and move down the field. Drops and three lost turnovers put the 49ers in a bad position most of the day.You know it was a bad day when Robbie Gould had a rough outing. The 49ers scored a touchdown on their opening drive and Gould missed a field goal. The hold looked OK, but something wasn’t right and Gould didn’t attempt to kick. Later in the game, trailing 14-6, Gould missed a 45-yard attempt. Who knows what happens late in the game if those four points are converted, but things finish a little different. That being said, even with a win this was a statement as to the 49ers problems. The Cardinals entered the game as the last remaining winless team. Their defense was pretty solid coming in
, and Josh Rosen is an upgrade over Sam Bradford, but they are still not a particularly good team. They showed it in this game, with the 49ers out-gaining them by a sizable margin. And yet, the 49ers were trailing most of the day and never seemed like they were getting enough done.It was also a rough day on the injury report. They didn’t lose nearly as many players as they have the past few weeks, but there was a big one. Running back Matt Breida suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter. He left to get his ankles taped, but then was sent to the locker room. He was ruled out early in the third quarter. His status for Week 6 is up in the air.Up Next: @ Green Bay Packers, Monday Night FootballThe 49ers have their first prime time game of the season when they travel to Lambeau Field to face the Green Bay Packers. The Packers lost 31-23 to the Detroit Lions in a game they trailed nearly wire-to-wire. They pushed back with a pair of third quarter scores, but the defense couldn’t get a needed stop early in the fourth quarter. The story of the game was Mason Crosby missing four field goals and an extra point on the day. Green Bay dropped to 2-2-1 with the loss. Good morning folks, and a happy Sunday to you. Today marks the second of three consecutive Sundays during which the 49ers will not play, as they’ll face the New York Giants on Monday night. Despite the extended break since the Raiders game on Thursday night (a week and a half ago), the team has had difficulty recuperating, and will be missing several key players - again - come Monday night. Although he was active, and productive, during week 9, Pierre Garcon has been ruled out for tomorrow’s game. He’s currently dealing with a knee injury which has kept him off the field for multiple games this season. However, the injury report does not make mention of his shoulder injury, which is certainly welcome news. As the 49ers enter their bye week after MNF, hope springs eternal that Garcon will heal up with the extra rest
, and come back ready to play during week 12. The injury report is rounded out with news that Reuben Foster (hamstring) and Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder) will both miss their second consecutive games. Considering the frequency and impact of injuries that the 49ers have dealt with this season, I’d be inclined to support benching presumed starters if they’re borderline healthy - with no playoff contention to worry about, protecting their health from aggravation is definitely the smart move. As with Garcon, hopefully these two will take advantage of the upcoming bye week to heal up.The 49ers face a struggling Giants squad, who, despite their pitiful record, boast a fair amount of top-end offensive talent. Jaquiski Tartt and Reuben Foster will be replaced by Tyvis Powell and Malcolm Smith, respectively, who will surely have their hands full dealing with the dynamic play of RB Saquon Barkley & all-world WR Odell Beckham Jr. Pierre Garcon’s snaps will be replaced by some permutation of rookie Dante Pettis and Kendrick Bourne, and there’s a high likelihood that Trent Taylor will finally find himself back in the mix.Week 10 preview | Garcia, 4th & 9Week 10 injury report | Chan, NBC Sports Bay Area | Biderman, Sac BeeKyle Shanahan urges defense to stay relentless | Chan, NBC Sports Bay AreaNo decision yet on moving game due to fire smoke | Chan, NBC Sports Bay AreaKyle Shanahan’s remarks on Matt Breida | Chan, NBC Sports Bay Area
